Traced from collective memories, reforged from broken pieces, Korean artist Yee Sookyung, born in 1963 in Seoul, has translated ideas into forms by transfigured imageries using her unique cultural approach. She works on ancient porcelain pieces and gold. Her works, since 2000, have been displayed under the invitation of many internationally well-known museums. Museums such as the Saatchi Gallery, Boston Museum of Modern Art, Chicago Smart Museum of Art, National Museum of Korea, Kumho Museum, and Gyeonggi Museum have even included some of her works as their exclusive collection. Using her particular artistic lexis, Yee Sookyung has successfully secured herself in the art field and has become one of Korea's most influential contemporary artists.

Her creation has three major features: ritualistic majesty, genre-crossing, and philosophical transfiguration. These three concepts are not only localized artistic presentation but also globalized cultural trend.

Yee Sookyung can recognize the extend significance of the material she uses while creating sculptures, paintings, videos, or even installations. She can understand the internal strength and magical influence of her works, studying ideas and mind-sets. Her works are elegant and rich metamorphosis. The series "Translated Vase" can best illustrate how she transforms traditional and noble craft into contemporary and novel art. This series thus transcends time and definition. Gathering broken pieces from today's Korean master craftsmen and from excavated historical ceramic site, Yee Sookyung has forged these pieces with 24K pure gold, discussing the meaning and the possibilities of perfection. She has rendered what should be forgotten into what should be cherished. The presentation thus flashes with both oriental elegance and contemporary wit.

In 1992, Yee Sookyung's first sole exhibition in Seoul and Tokyo had opened her a door to international stage. Since then many countries started to invite her for exhibitions. In 2014, she was invited to National Taiwan Museum of Fine Art for Asia Biennial Exhibition; the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei also included her for their exhibition on Korean Contemporary Arts. In the spring of 2015, her sole exhibition "When I Become You" was displayed first in Daegu Art Musuem in Korea and then in Taipei, revealing the transition between subject and object.

Comparing different times and backgrounds, the materials she used and her methods have already transcended craftsmanship and have become art, weaving East and West, present and past all together. In recent days this creative method has crossed over to traditional music and dance, criticizing but at the same time studying the tradition, breaking the differences among social and cultural strata. Her art is poetic, emotional, dreaming, visionary, and attractive. It is so convincing as it transcends daily experience almost like magic.

Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on.

"Ode on a Grecian Urn." John Keats
