Bahk Seon-Ghi is a Korean sculptor and installation artist who was born in 1966, living and working in Kyeong Ki-do, South Korea. Following his graduation from Chung-Ang University in Seoul, he spent several years in Europe, studying sculpture at the Accademia di Belle Arti Brera in Milan and at Barnet College in London.

Bahk is known for his monumental, ethereal installations using natural materials (mostly charcoal) to create the ordinary vision of reverse thinking everyday objects such as tables and chairs, staircases, plant pots, picture frames and circles, which appear to float through light in space. His works thematically explore the natural of life, in particular the rebirth relationship between birth, death, and decay. Charcoal, is his material of choice, and is also the basis of exploration, the reincarnation relationship between natural matter and life and death, which has ritual-like spiritual significance in Korea.

The Visionary Intersection of Nature and Human Society
Bahk’s hanging sculpture explores the symbiotic relationship between nature and humans with charcoal. For him, charcoal is the final form of coexistence between trees and human society. Each unit of the charcoal dissociates the volume of the sculpture, and impact of the viewer's sensory perception of the existing space.
The artist uses the tiny pieces of charcoal, which has the power of purification and tranquility, with transparent and almost invisible nylon threads, combining them into a huge "paradoxical" individual. Light penetrates from the discrete charcoal, miraculously, it seems to breathe there, animating the space in different forms.

In Bahk’s Aggregation series of colossal charcoal installations resemble Roman columns, spiral staircases, flower pots, side tables and chairs. Like a floating building, the artist treats the relationship between human beings, nature and life from a whole new perspective. He believes that nature should not be mistakenly seen as the background for modern progress, but rather plays an integral role in our daily lives.

Visual games under the reconstruction of reality
As for Bahk’s flat sculpture, it shapes ordinary reality in extremely flat and slim conditions that it exposes the bizarre relation of objects to reality. All such creativity escapes the ideology and confinement of traditional sculpture; we can tell the general implications of shapes from its entirety, yet we are amazed by the lightness and the visual wonderment from all the miniatures. Bahk Seon-Ghi’s "Visual game" comes from rational calculation, it shows the dual characteristics of reality distortion and reality reconstruction.
Viewers are forced to see a distorted view that changes with their point of view.
Overturning our subjective prejudices of reality, Bahk Seon-Ghi shows us a slightly slanted angle by subverting reality, challenging what we think is true, and inviting us to step into the world of visual games.

Bahk-SeonGhi grasps the time, space, light and shadow in his hands; in its infinite reincarnation, Bahk captures the commotions in Nature, allowing charcoal to stay in intangible form in everyday life and making space solid though flat.
