Choe U-Ram, a Korean artist, the most eye-catching representative of contemporary kinetic sculpture, who actively stays on the international art stage. He is well-known for his expertise on creating enigmatic machinery installation by using rigid stainless steel, delicate metal, micro-motor, luminary and heat sensor, and LED etc. His works blends with various fields such as mythological esthetics, mechanical engineering, IC technology, visual arts, acousto-optic, music, philosophy, biology etc, as if dream weaving magic. U-Ram’s works have earned him the honor of “Young Artist Today Award” in Korea three times, and he marches toward international further, becomes the shiniest star in the art field.
U-Ram separates each letter of his name as “United Research of Anima Machine” and publishes a series of works named in Latin (scientific name) with the form of “Pseudo-science observation report”, and each piece of his works are given their own stories as if they realistically exist. U-Ram’s works break through the edge of time and space, and show symbol and metaphor that our senses unable to convey.
Making his works alive, U-Ram keeps the slowly movement of the cold machine for their bizarre percipience, furthermore, they appear with science-fictional carriage accompany rhythm. Not only imitating pre-historical creatures such as plants, fish, and insects, but also deriving from ancient mythology and religion that makes his machinery sculptures express more societal implication and primitive fears from human beings. He names his works “Anima Machine”, conveys the core of his creations perfectly.
He is fond of denominating his works in Latin and Sanskrit, to coin images as if they have been existing for ages, glowing faintly with slow movement. Definitions of lives are ambiguous, once if machines start moving, we could also define them as new-born lives. Their movements are circulate spontaneously, as inherent motive force of real life. Leaving the restraint and limits of traditional mechanical sculpture behind, U-ram leads us to explore the very first of organism existence nature through the usage of contemporary technology, and predicts the end of civilization from the origin. From the esthetics with slow movement rhythm his works show, we can see the sublimation of art craft, the initiation of “ Anima Machine”. Under the delicate fascinating cover, is the primeval desire of humanity; behind the rhythm of the cold machinery movement, is not barely the atmosphere or stories which U-Ram’s works show, they are souls and lives oscillating. Once when you thought the works just barely captivate your attention at the first sight, however, the lingering charm of their slowly, elegantly movement and shine reflects realistic perception and inherent touch from the inside.
As if an alchemist in 21th century, esthetics that Choe U-Ram crosses over from plains limit, alike prayers, also mirror image samples of time and space, which imply the slight connection between universe and human being as dust. This is the dimension originated by Choe U-Ram’s art. From the bizarre space which reveals by those machinery creatures’ movement , not only can we find the mist and mystery of organism, but also pry into the secret of universe, and rise our inherent touch.
